What do you do to help you get to sleep?

I have just read an article in the Daily mail about insomnia, where an old Eastenders actor explains how he has dealt with his insomnia by slowing his heart rate down.

In the article it states that :
'Insomnia is defined as regularly taking 30 minutes or more to get to sleep, difficulty staying asleep at night, or waking up too early and not being able to get back to sleep'

If that definition is true we must all suffer from insomnia at one time or another.

I never go to sleep as soon as I go to bed - I either read or play solitaire on my telephone until my eyes feel really heavy and I drop off.

The worst for me is when I wake up in the middle of the night and I can't get back to sleep. I try all the different tricks I have learnt - counting backwards from 200, breathe slowly, imagine you are floating, imagine you are looking at a waterfall (that is a good one), although my favourite one is to imagine I have won the lottery big time - 10 million pounds or more. I now know exactly what I would do with the 10million, right down to the last £100,000. I just have to do it each week to stand a chance of winning!

Anyway, having read this article I will try the new method suggested and see if it works.

What do you do to help you get to sleep at night - all ideas accepted.

Someone told me once that when you can't go back to sleep it's the Universe's way of telling you there is something else to be done, so best to get up, put both feet solidly on the ground and ask with an open heart what it is you should be doing. Supposedly, this is our most creative time!

It happens to me all the time. I breath in slowly until I can't fit any more in, then let it out slowly. It usually works, unless I start thinking of work, and then I'm buggered. When that happens, I haver to get up and have a shower, read a while and then back to bed.
good luck

I have had a problem with insomnia for years, I read until my eyes close, but as soon as I put my head on the pillow......bang, I am awake...if I do drop off to sleep I can wake and be wide awake......some nights I just cannot sleep, it can be 3 or 4am before I drop off.

Drives me scatty......but I just have to deal with it, I tried the thinking of winning the lottery thing, didn't work, mind you all that lovely lolly, no wonder I could not sleep trying to spend it all!!!

I haven't slept right through a night since my illness was diagnosed in May ... at first I put it down to sheer panic, but as things progressed well, and I still wasn't sleeping, I began to worry. ... which makes things worse. I take ages to drop off, and then wake several times through the night, often for over an hour at a time. I regularly don't sleep beyond 4 a.m. I was able to cope when I was at home but now I'm back at work it's desperate!
I've tried everything ... so I'll be watching your suggestions closely!

Since being peri menopausal, I dont sleep well. I often wake at 4am and can't get back to sleep. It used to bother me, but now, I just "day dream" instead. When I do sleep through the night, its a better feeling than winning the pools!!! xxxx
